How to go on top of The Dome - St Peter's Basilica

If you like to enjoy one of the best views in Rome you have to climb up the Dome of St Peter's Basilica, designed by the great Michelangelo but finished by his pupil Giacomo Della Porta. The Dome has clearly inspired other famous domes around the world such as St Paul's Dome in London and the Capitoline building in Washington.

You have to pass the security check as if going inside the basilica and then you turn right at the Holy Door. Then there are two possibilities: you can climb all the way on foot, approximately 550 stairs or you can take an elevator and then continue the last 300 stairs on foot. The tickets with elevator are 10 euro per person whereas the price without elevator is 8 euro.

It is recommendable to go early in the morning since there could be long lines. Consider that the stairs are very narrow and not brightly lit. You can buy souvenirs and use the restrooms on the way to the dome.
